OLD INFO FOR HISTORICAL INTEREST:

SoCo Depot: Sonoma County Coworking, last day 10/15/08

Contact for what happened, the role of the economy for coworking spaces, coworking in a semi-rural environment, etc, etc: Anthony Tusler, coworking (at) aboutdisability (dot) com, 707 795-0515. It was fun, satisfying, and worthwhile!

The time has finally come -- SoCo Depot is closing. Our membership has continued to shrink. Occasionally we've added new members, but never enough to grow or sustain ourselves over the long haul. It hasn't be workable even with great support from the community and the landlord who has gone out of his way to help us weather the economic storm.

Coworking is a wonderful idea and practice. Everyone who has spent any time working in SoCo Depot has been amazed at how productive they've been and what a great space it is.  But, what with the economic downturn, space at SoCo Depot is an expense that can be cut, and people have.

The creation and establishment of SoCo Depot has been an exciting, wonderful venture that I will treasure always. I consider all of the time that I put into it to be well worth it.

The address was 11790 Main St. Penngrove.

OLD INFO FOR HISTORICAL INTEREST:

Description

Our space at the Penngrove Station, SoCo Depot, is in downtown Penngrove, a small town in southern Sonoma County. The building is an old, tin-clad, wooden building. Most recently our space was used to print T-shirts. Originally it was built to transfer chickens, eggs, milk, and other produce to freight cars going to San Francisco. There are wide rolling metal doors on each side of the building, spaced the same distance as the doors of the freight cars. The building was also used at some point as the train station—our space has the walk-up ticket window. The building is the perfect balance of funky with exposed beams, high ceilings, 80 year old wood floors with all new wiring, plumbing, and insulation.

SoCo Depot has 1600 sq ft. It's an newsroom-style open floor plan like CitizenSpace (most of us were surprised how much we liked the setup). There's a conference room, bathroom, and a space for making coffee and tea. It's right next to the community park and across fromthe post office and cafés. Currently, the monthly cost is $275 a month. Let us know if you would like to join.

If you are interested and/or want more information email info (at) SoCoDepot (dot) com or call 707.981-4820. You can also join our group listserv at Google Groups, SoCo-coworking It's a closed group so email me at Anthony (at) SoCoDepot (dot) com to be put on the list.

We had a great open house. Watch the blog, SoCo Depot Blog, for more info.

Please pass the word. We still need to get the information out to the existing social networks. The south county is rich with home-based workers.
